Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C. is hiring a Payroll Manager in Salem, Virginia at our corporate headquarters. The Payroll Manager strategically leads the payroll program of the organization to attract, retain, and motivate employees.  The individual in this role utilizes strong managerial skills and experience with UKG Payroll system, multi-state payroll administration, and deep knowledge of payroll regulations including tax reporting to ensure accurate payroll account transactions and adherence to federal, state, and local legal requirements. Seeking candidates with a Bachelor's degree in a quantitative business discipline such as business management, accounting, finance or economics or equivalent education and experience. A minimum of ten years payroll experience and five years Payroll management/supervisory experience preferred. Experience with multi-state payroll administration a plus. Experience with UKG Payroll system is highly preferred, but not required. Professional certification such as CPP, CPM, CPA is preferred.

Requirements for the Payroll Manager postion include:

  • Thorough knowledge/understanding of payroll/time-keeping systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable multi-state payroll-related and federal wage and hour laws.
  • Strong understanding of multi-state FSLA and ERISA laws.
  • Accounting knowledge in order to perform monthly payroll account reconciliations.
  • Strong management and decision-making skills.
  • Must be a strong communicator with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate the highest level of ethical behavior.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.  Must be able to interpret an extensive variety of data relating to employment laws.
  • Must be able to engage in effective and persuasive discussions on complex topics with top management and other firm personnel.  Must be able to make presentations to company personnel.
  • Excellent time-management, problem-prevention and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be detail and figure oriented.
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks and to delegate when appropriate.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple competing tasks and demands.  Requires strong organizational skills.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Products.
