Equitable is in the midst of a comprehensive agile transformation across the organization referred to as New Ways of Working. Members of the actuarial team were part of the first wave of this change with the standing up of our Finance Modernization initiative. The rest of the team will now be joining them in New Ways of Working through the creation of the Actuarial Center of Excellence. Led by our Chief Actuary, the Center of Excellence will encompass corporate actuaries working on valuation, model development, assumption setting, reinsurance and financial reporting. With a focus on providing exceptional support to our partners across the business, Corporate Actuarial has unveiled a new structure and several new leadership roles.

The Head of Economic Valuation and Reporting will be a key part of the leadership of the Non-GAAP Valuation chapter and will report to the Non-GAAP Valuation Chapter Lead. The position is a multi-faceted role with individual contributor responsibilities aligned to the VISL Actuarial Reporting Squad, accountability for analyzing and communicating the EEM (Equitable Economic Model) results to key stakeholders as well as providing focused attention to the staffing and development of the Non-GAAP Valuation chapter members.

A successful candidate must be skilled at working in a matrixed organization and have a strong track record for developing and leading teams.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Co-Lead transition of Non-GAAP Valuation chapter teammates to agile operating model
  • Support staffing & development of Non-GAAP Valuation chapter teammates.  Includes recruiting, check-ins, year-end performance, compensation, and other development opportunities.
  • Support members of the Non-GAAP Valuation Chapter through coaching, mentoring, and feedback
  • Work closely with squads, coaches, and other key stakeholders to prioritize and successfully deliver on Objectives and ensure proper alignment of resources and skills based on priorities/OKR’s
  • Maintain open lines of communication with Product Owners (PO’s) and other key stakeholders, including strong partnership in prioritization of enterprise and cross-team related actuarial initiatives
  • Accountable for analyzing, communicating and ensuring the timeliness and sufficient accuracy of EEM results to key stakeholders, including Non-GAAP Chapter Lead, Chief Actuary, Treasurer, etc.
  • Evaluates the organization's and industry's practices, with eye on continuous improvement of Non-GAAP Valuation Chapter practices
  • Ensure consistency in Non-GAAP valuation practices across Actuarial organization, with a focus on PS Area.

Qualifications

Communicating Complex Concepts:   Ability to use summarization and simplification techniques to explain complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience.

Problem Solving:  Analyzes and synthesizes information and devises alternative resolution strategies.  Develops successful resolutions to critical or wide-impact problems.

Accuracy and Attention to Detail: Understanding the necessity and value of accuracy; ability to complete tasks with high levels of precision.

Coaching Others: Knowledge of coaching and mentoring concepts and methods; ability to encourage, motivate, and guide individuals in learning and improving effectiveness.

Financial Risk Management: Develops strategy and best practices for management of risk. Champions the use of new risk management approaches and tools.

Insurance Products: Ability to apply the knowledge of Life Insurance and Variable Annuity products and develops an evaluation system to assess key business line performance.

Insurance Finance and Actuarial Concepts: Provides recommendations for international insurance finance, accounting and actuarial issues. Trains others on interpreting and analyzing a variety of corporate financial reports. Teaches others the unique contributions and interrelationship of different financial functions. Consults on financial goals, measures and results throughout the insurance industry. Works with all advanced features of finance such as IBNR, loss development, and reserving. Participates in designing financial and actuarial tools and standards for a business unit.

Financial Reporting: Promotes the importance of accurate organization-wide financial reporting. Develops and ensures compliance with organizational standards and procedures for financial reporting. Develops troubleshooting mechanisms for finding and correcting errors in financial reports. Oversees compliance with and business implications of ORSA. Designs training programs for a full range of financial report-writing tools. Consults on the data flow from raw financial records through complex organizational reports.

Internal Controls: Advises external auditors on the specifics of the organization's internal controls. Designs and publishes forms used for internal control documentation. Implements and enhances internal controls in multiple and diverse environments. Re-engineers business processes for the sake of improving internal controls. Trains others in processes required for compliance with new internal controls. Establishes corrective actions for use in cases of financial irregularities or dishonesty

Insurance Valuation:  Strong knowledge of Statutory and economic valuation practices and requirements and how profitability of our life products is reflected in our Statutory financial statements.

Other Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree required
  • FSA designation required
  • 10+ years of actuarial experience required
  • Experience with economic valuation required
